oday GameSpot had a chance to play Counter-Strike version 1.6, which developer Valve says will be released via its Steam content-delivery application on January 16. The free update to the popular multiplayer shooter includes two new weapons, a counterterrorist tactical shield, a new map called de_airstrip, and revamped versions of two old maps, de_inferno and de_aztec. We experimented with all the new additions, many of which were originally intended for Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, the forthcoming single-player Counter-Strike game. The new assault rifle on the terrorist side, the Galil, costs $2,000 in the game, making it the cheapest terrorist rifle of the bunch. A new counterterrorist weapon has also been added, the FAMAS. This new weapon likewise is the cheapest counterterrorist rifle available, costing only $2,250. The Galil doesn't have a secondary fire function, but it does have a tremendous rate of fire and is fairly accurate. The FAMAS' secondary fire mode is a three-round burst.
The most significant addition to the game is the counterterrorists' tactical shield, which currently costs $1,000. This shield allows the counterterrorist using it (and anyone behind him) to benefit from its bulletproof defense, but to get the full potential of protection that the shield can offer, the player using it has to crouch behind it. There are a few drawbacks to the shield, including a slower running speed, being able to use only a pistol while wielding it, not being able to fire when you have the shield pulled in front of you, and not being able to have your pistol silencer on when using it. While a shield-equipped counterterrorist has little offensive capability, he may prove to be a valuable ally on a well-organized team.
Additionally, we got a chance to play on one of the new maps, de_airstrip, which will come with the 1.6 update. This is a bomb map that features some tight corridors, tunnels, and a few structures near the bomb sites. We also got a chance to check out the revamped versions of de_aztec and de_inferno, which are basically the same as before but with some considerable visual enhancements. The wall and street textures of de_inferno have been replaced with some very nice looking new ones, and de_aztec's bridge has lost a few boards, making it look unstable.
One of the interesting changes in 1.6 is that you can no longer see how many people are living or dead on an opposing team when you're still alive. This change should make for some highly suspenseful matches and will undoubtedly cause players to play more conservatively in long matches since there can be no way of knowing how many opponents remain.
Another significant change to the game is its revamped interface, which now allows you to modify your controls and display settings and even refresh the server list all from within an active game session. The new interface is sleek looking and also makes it easier than before to type in console commands, since it shows a list of possible commands as you begin typing them into the console.
Counter-Strike 1.6 will be released later this week, and no doubt players of the world's most popular online shooter are eager to see how the new changes will affect gameplay over the long run.
